PIP-10: wPOKT Multi-sig Signer Selection

To operate the wPOKT bridge, we need a Gnosis Safe 5/7 multi-sig that can mint wPOKT as needed to supply tokens to the liquidity bridges.

Rather than putting forward a predefined selection of signers for the wPOKT multi-sig, then getting the stamp of approval from the DAO, we wanted to make the selection process more inclusive of our community.

Therefore, this proposal invites anyone to volunteer to be a signer, by responding below.

Signer Requirements

The multi-sig signers will be responsible for reviewing/signing the wPOKT minting transactions that supply the token pools in the liquidity bridges (Boosty and Ferrum). The signers are not approving every bridge transaction, only the occasional wPOKT mint to supply the bridges. When the DAO votes to mint more wPOKT, the multi-sig must execute this decision.

Therefore, the multi-sig should consist of signers who are:

  • trustworthy (wonā€™t collude to gain a 3/7 veto on the DAOā€™s decision)
  • already active community members (will be responsive signers)
  • committed for the long-term (wonā€™t become unresponsive signers over time).

There are also security requirements for the Ethereum address belonging to the signer:

  • Hardware wallet
  • Brand new account (0 transactions, no ENS)

Security by Anonymity Option

While we want to be inclusive of the community, we also have concerns about all 7 signers being identified. Even the pseudonyms among us are not perfectly anonymous; they could be doxxed with a little effort and incentive, of which there will be many as POKT and wPOKT grow more valuable.

Therefore, we are including a ā€œsecurity by anonymityā€ option in this proposal. If the DAO approves this option by a 50% majority (of those who voted), the Pocket Network Foundation will select 3 anonymous signers, and the remaining 4 signers will be determined by the above selection process. If the DAO rejects this option, all 7 signers will be determined by the above selection process.

Why 3? This allows the anonymous signers to veto transactions in the event that the other 4 identified signers have been compromised. As a result, this should deter would-be attackers from attempting to compromise the 4 identified signers.

Selection Process

The multi-sig signer selection process will be as follows:

  • Voting on Security by Anonymity Option (starting: 1st Jan): We will first hold an initial Approve/Reject vote on the option to have 3 of the 7 signers be anonymously selected by the Foundation. This will determine how many of the most popular volunteers (4 vs 7) are selected in the Voting on Volunteers starting 7th Jan.
  • Volunteering (deadline: 6th Jan): Anyone can volunteer to be a signer. They should reply to this proposal arguing why they meet the requirements for the role and providing an Ethereum address that meets the security requirements.
  • Voting on Volunteers (starting: 7th Jan): Voting will begin the day after the volunteering deadline and last for 1 week. All valid volunteers will be listed in a multiple-choice Snapshot poll and chosen using Approval Voting, which means each voter will be able to cast 1 vote for each of the volunteers they approve of (with a weight of 1 per choice). The most popular signers according to an aggregate of all of the voterā€™s approvals will be the final signers selected for the wPOKT bridge multi-sig. This will be 4 signers or 7 signers depending on the outcome of the vote on the Security by Anonymity Option.

I have edited the proposal to clarify the function of this multi-sig.

And to add a more secure option for the multi-sig selection.

Good day. As a potential volunteer multi-sig delegate, I have a couple of questions to help confirm whether I may be an appropriate fit for the job. I am a medical officer in the USAF nearing retirement and interested in becoming more involved here but admittedly as of yet with little technical knowledge of computer science (and still not yet retired and free to work from home). The last time I programmed anything was 30 years ago in LOGO and Basic- lol. However, I am very keenly interested in the societal benefits of WEB3 and in particular my intuition leads me to wanting to gain better technical knowledge of and trust within the POKT Community.

My current question is simply whether I will have the bandwidth or not for this.

  1. How time sensitive are the instances requiring my signature?
  2. Can I batch requests and set aside a specified block of time each day or must I sign instances as they come through in real time?

If the answer to 2 is yes I may batch, then I think I can swing this and I would submit my interest. Thank you in advance for your responses as it can help make sure I am setting us up for success if I am selected.

I support Addison, Jinx, and Rosati based on my interactions with them and observations in the community.

I also support the anonymity proposal as long as the Foundation knows who they are and keeps it tight-lipped.

yay all my favorite ppl from TG have stepped forward. i defn vouch for Jinx, Ming, Addison, and Lex. theyā€™ve all shown great knowledge and commitment in the TG channel.

i think the anonymous thing makes sense. yeah, letā€™s do that. lol.

Hi, All. I would like to thank @JackALaing for this proposal. I have listed out my qualifications and required information below.

Apologies for the delay in the response, but this JUST came in the mail today! It is new and has 0 transactions, so should fit the criteria:

Signer Request Reasoning:

Itā€™s important to have well known and public-facing signers as a part of this wPOKT multi-sig, as can very clearly be seen by looking at the other signer volunteers in this thread. As the head of a registered organization with three sub service lines that require immense community trust (OTC, Noderunning, and Professional Services) I think that my past experience of serving the POKT community in a business function is coming to a head and now is time to turn to a voluntary function.

I confirm that:

Iā€™m willing and able to be a signer in the wPOKT multi-sig. I understand this is an ongoing role that requires being responsive to signature requests.
I understand that this role does not entitle me to make my own decisions, I am simply executing the will of the DAO.
I understand that being a signer is an unpaid voluntary role.

My qualifications as a Pocket Network community member:

Traditionally coming from the forensic accounting field, detailed transaction review and ethical decision making is inherent to my experiences in the traditional financial sector. Entering the blockchain space as a node running provision leader, trusted OTC provider, and general project advancement proponent, I think that my future, at least for the near-term, will be full of opportunities to help the network and community of POKT (it is a dream come true if it also turns out to be for the long term. In short, as a trusted community member managing millions of dollars, as well simply a person that is here to help make POKT go beyond the stars, this role is one that is most fitting.

Thanks!

Why I want to be a signer:

I am deeply invested in the long term success of the Pocket ecosystem. I recently sold my web2 game hosting company at the end of 2021 to focus on blockchain related business ventures. I was offered POKT during the private offering in early 2021. Since then, POKT has become my largest holdings. I invest in it to stake, I have given loans using pokt as collateral, I am looking to make my own dapp in the space, and I have got multiple friends and family to be involved as well. To be a member of the wPOKT mult-sig would be one of the highest honors in the community.

I confirm that:

  • Iā€™m willing and able to be a signer in the wPOKT multi-sig. I understand this is an ongoing role that requires being responsive to signature requests.
  • I understand that this role does not entitle me to make my own decisions, I am simply executing the will of the DAO.
  • I understand that being a signer is an unpaid voluntary role.

My qualifications as a Pocket Network community member:

In addition to my fire gifs in Twitter / Telegrams gif tool under ā€˜Pocket Networkā€™, I received my Bachelors Degree in Finance from USF focused on trading in 2010. Then I co-founded the worldā€™s largest Minecraft server hosting company in 2013 with my childhood friend. We successfully managed its acquisition in Nov 2021 for an undisclosed mid 8-figure sum with an effort to focus on web3. Currently, I am one of the largest private node stakers with ~200 nodes across several providers. I am involved in a private venture fund specializing in the POKT ecosystem and other Blockchain companies. I contribute to community giveaways with the Poktopus and other notable brands in the space. And lastly, I am an active member of Telegram, Twitter, and as many IRL events as I can get to.

Please notice me senpai.

Addison has been nothing but helpful, professional and responsive. I support him as Multi-sig signer.

Seth Mattox is almost feverish with his love, knowledge and support of the entire POKT project. Heā€™s a dream team member, I donā€™t think you could find a better candidate for the position as signer.

The Security by Anonymity Option was approved by 5 votes to 1. Snapshot

This means the Pocket Network Foundation will be selecting 3 signers anonymously and the remaining 4 signers will be selected by a vote of the DAO.

The selection vote will start tomorrow at 7am EST: Snapshot

Sorry I missed this. We expect transactions to be happening no more than 4 times a year as an estimate. The multi-sig will just be minting/burning wPOKT, which will be used in the liquidity-lock bridge; the multi-sig will not be approving every bridge transaction.

I have put you in the list of options to be voted on just in case but if you are selected as one of the top 4 and donā€™t want to proceed, we can select the next most popular option.
